The corporate boys don’t own us…you do, except the Homers,
Ranch Bowl, The City Weekly, Mid America Center, The Amarillo, Mickey Finn’s, Fowler System Design, McFoster’s
Natural Kind Café, Shea Riley’s Pub, Murphy's Lounge, Metro Audio Dynamics, Famous Dave's, Hooters, and many
more. I’m just getting really tired of 89.7 The River claiming to “not
be corporately owned” yet they always play 4-5 “pre-recorded sponsor” ads.
The other day I was listening, yes that’s right I was listening, and they played SIX of these ads in a row, all
for different sponsors. Does anyone remember the phone-a-thon held during the
summer, where people called in to “save the river from the corporate world”??
Well I do, and I also remember they met and exceeded their goal, kind of makes you wonder where the hell all that money
went. I think they spent the majority of the money on those idiotic commercials
that makes them sound even more corporately owned. I have begun to wean myself
off Q89.7 FM and listen to Q98.5 FM. Q98.5
FM is a channel that according to Q89.7 FM “can’t pay the bills” because they play commercials. I have to congratulate Q98.5 FM on their music selection since their new re-format. They have begun to play the exact same music as Q89.7 FM. Q98.5 FM doesn’t deny
their corporate ownership, they don’t play stupid commercials showing their defiance of the corporate world. Honestly, the only time Q89.7 FM plays music that nobody else in this market does is during “Sunday
School” and during their techno show. Other than that they rarely play
the local music which is what started the “89.7 The River” cult following.
Way to screw that up;) Honestly the only time they play the local
music is when there is a CD release party they are invited to or they are sponsoring a show with the local bands in it. I have now begun to hear more and more HIP-HOP on this station, which 4 months ago
would have been unthinkable, but now for some reason they really want to screw themselves and their dwindling, dedicated following. I remember the days of “89.7 The River” I loved to hear the local bands
played all the time and the punk rock, garage style music they played. Now since
the re-format “Q89.7 FM” which is what I call it since you can’t tell they aren’t
corporately owned anymore, all they play is…well “pop-rock” music, not the music which put “89.7 The
River” on the map. I just don’t get it, it a shame.
